Electricity in Växjö has a long history, starting in 1887 when what was then the Växjö Town Power Station came online, bringing a modern energy supply to the area. 1969 saw the Town Council of the time take a far-sighted decision on energy issues, agreeing to build a combined heat and power plant for district heating. In 1979, energy supply was brought under one umbrella in a company wholly owned by the municipality, Växjö Energi AB.
Current organisation
Växjö Energi AB is an energy company wholly owned by Växjö Municipality and organised as follows:
|
|
- Växjö Energi AB
Växjö Energi is a municipal company owned directly by local residents. In our responsibility includes carrying out production of district heating and electricity from our Sandvik biofuelbased combined heat and power plant and the expansion of district and local heating. Another important part of our business is WexNet, our open operator-independent optic fibre network, which currently covers all the districts of Växjö Town and a large number of smaller villages in Växjö Municipality.
- Växjö Energi Elnät AB
Our wholly-owned subsidiary, Växjö Energi Elnät, is responsible for the electricity network in Växjö Town. The company owns and is responsible for all operation, maintenance, development and expansion of the electricity network. The distribution area currently covers around 29,000 customers. The electricity network operation is a natural monopoly under the supervision of the Swedish Energy Agency.
- Bixia
Since 1999, our electricity trading has been dealt with by Bixia (former Östkraft), which is based on a partnership of several local energy companies. Bixia's business concept is, together with the owner companies in each place, to operate as a local player in electricity trade. In total, Bixia provides electricity for just over 150,000 customers. This strong domestic market is a great asset to Bixia, as is the expertise of its staff, with key functions such as power trade and finance located in Växjö. A number of people at Växjö Energi also carry out work for Bixia.
