The municipal IT plan of 1997 outlined a need for a broad local data communication network - a strong factor in terms of competition and a benefit to the whole municipality as the IT services of the future require greater bandwidth.
Development of an open, operator-independent optic fibre network started in 1995 with the primary aim of meeting our own needs for operational monitoring of the electricity network. However, since 1998 the expansion has accelerated considerably. Broadband connection to all the municipality's schools and over 12,000 apartments has created the basis for a modern optic fibre network covering all Växjö districts and many locations around Växjö Municipality.
Our active focus on IT has made Växjö one of the country's leading municipalities in terms of new infrastructure and benefited commerce and private individuals in the region. Our broadband work aims to allow other municipalities to connect up their local networks and to allow connections via optic fibre to the national network.
