On loan from nature
The extraction of forestry fuel has a positive effect on the nitrogen balance in the forest. This is particularly the case in Southern Sweden, where the high level of nitrogen precipitation is a serious environmental problem. Harvesting forestry fuel at the same time as the logging removes just as much nitrogen as is generated during the growth of the forest.
In order to achieve a closed-loop cycle, a large proportion of the ash from combustion is returned to the forest from where the residues were taken. The ash contains plant nutrients and trace elements which constitute a valuable fertiliser as well as combating acidification.
The minerals calcium, magnesium and sodium are returned to the forest, retaining equilibrium.
